What are the poses in yoga called?

In the yoga world, these poses are known as Asanas. If you’re just starting out, Downward Dog and Child’s Pose (aka your best friend when you need a break) are the big ones you’ll see everywhere. Here are a few other common ones you’ll likely encounter:

Cat-Cow: This is usually the first thing you’ll do to wake up your spine. You just flow back and forth between arching your back like a cat and dropping your belly. It feels amazing if you’ve been sitting at a desk all day.

Sun Salutations: Think of this as the “standard” yoga warm-up. It’s a little flow where you move through a few different moves—like a plank and a little backbend—to get your heart rate up.

The Warriors (I & II): These are the classic “power” poses. They’re all about leg strength and feeling steady. Warrior II is the one where you’re stretching your arms out wide—you’ll feel it in your quads for sure!

Downward-Facing Dog: Probably the most famous pose. It’s basically an upside-down “V.” It can be a bit tough on the arms at first, but it’s the best way to stretch out your hamstrings.
