What are the poses in yoga called?
In the yoga world, these poses are known as Asanas. If youâre just starting out, Downward Dog and Childâs Pose (aka your best friend when you need a break) are the big ones youâll see everywhere. Here are a few other common ones youâll likely encounter:
Cat-Cow: This is usually the first thing youâll do to wake up your spine. You just flow back and forth between arching your back like a cat and dropping your belly. It feels amazing if youâve been sitting at a desk all day.
Sun Salutations: Think of this as the âstandardâ yoga warm-up. Itâs a little flow where you move through a few different movesâlike a plank and a little backbendâto get your heart rate up.
The Warriors (I & II): These are the classic âpowerâ poses. Theyâre all about leg strength and feeling steady. Warrior II is the one where youâre stretching your arms out wideâyouâll feel it in your quads for sure!
Downward-Facing Dog: Probably the most famous pose. Itâs basically an upside-down âV.â It can be a bit tough on the arms at first, but itâs the best way to stretch out your hamstrings.

Bridge Pose: A nice way to strengthen your glutes and open up your chest. You lie on your back and lift your hips upâitâs like a mini backbend that isnât too intimidating.
