This Singapore National Day carries special significance. It’s not every day, after all, that a fledgling nation-state turns 59. So what better way to celebrate sartorially than by embodying the spirit of “Together, As One United People”? This year’s National Day theme calls for unity and collective strength, making it the perfect occasion to showcase your patriotism with style.
The combination of red and white are classic colours, but one wrong move and you may end up looking corny, unless of course proudly wearing your patriotism on your sleeve is what you’re going for. There are definitely more stylish ways to show your love for your country.
Here are some ways to wear red and white on National Day without looking like the Singapore flag:
1. Determine Your Skin Tone
First things first, you need to determine what shade of red or white suits your skin tone. Finding your perfect shade will prevent you from looking washed out or lacklustre. If you are fair skinned, pick a shade that contains a hint of yellow to add a warm flush to your skin, such as cream or beige and apricot or cherry red. Warm skin tones can benefit from wearing cooler tones such as champagne or blush to balance out your look. Medium skin tones go best with creamy ivories and bright reds, while darker skin tones should go with cooler, lighter shades.
2. Go Low-Key with Muted Hues
If you don’t want to go the whole hog with solid colours, try muted shades instead. Tonal shades of red include burgundy, oxblood, and blush, which can serve as neutrals rather than the focal point of your outfit. This makes it easier to structure your whole outfit. A low-key colour means you can afford to play up other aspects such as shape and fabric — case in point: an oxblood leather pencil skirt.
3. Be Careful of Whites
When shopping for whites, don’t forget to hold up the piece against the light to check how sheer or opaque it is. Also, consider wearing flesh tones underneath. White underclothes can be just as noticeable as coloured ones when paired with white clothing.
White is a colour that can emphasise every inch of your body. If you have curves you wish to downplay, stick to snug — not clingy or skin-tight — materials that skim your curves.
4. Stick to a Theme
Be it preppy or ladylike, sporty or edgy, decide on your look and stick to it. Use the colours to play up the look. For instance, you don’t have to stick to bright red if you are going for a moodier look. Oxblood can work just as well. White, on the other hand, is perfect for that summery vibe. A white sundress or crochet shorts and striped top plays up the look.
5. Accessories are Your Friend
White is the perfect blank canvas to accessorise. Incorporating red and white accessories such as pumps or a clutch can give your outfit that extra punch and make it pop.
To really make a statement, go for bright and bold crimson shoes and embellishments. For a more understated look, accessorise neutrals such as soft greys with silver necklaces and red lipstick for a daintier Parisian flair.
