Men — Long seen as the embodiment of masculinity and strength, able to catch any curve-ball life throws our way and carry the weight of the world.
While there’s some truth to this line of thought, the notion that we are infallible is really just a myth.
Men reportedly live an average of six years shorter than women, and let’s face it, our tendency to put pride and ego ahead of openness and humility has proved to be our undoing, sometimes causing us to overlook pressing matters, like our own well-being.
Enter Movember, the month-long campaign held every November that brings awareness to the health issues that plague guys around the world— namely prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide.
Started in 2003, the Movember movement has seen thousands, if not millions of us standing together in solidarity, rolling up our sleeves and taking action to address the woes we face.
The simplest yet most effective way we use to promote Movember is the growing of a moustache. Much like how the pink ribbon is symbolic of breast cancer for women, the moustache is our badge of honour and our way of inspiring fellow men to rethink their health.
Arguably the biggest champion of this cause is the Movember Foundation, a charity whose goal is to reduce the rate of men dying prematurely by 25% come 2030.
Funding a range of projects, like cancer research programmes and mental health initiatives, the Movember Foundation hopes to bring about positive change on a global scale.
What can you do in Men National Day?
No matter your age, show your support for the movement by growing a moustache as well! Start the month with a clean-shaven face and let your ‘mo grow throughout the 30 days.
Don’t fly solo — get the gentlemen from your workplace and the boys from the bar to join in as well. The awareness you generate may be all it takes to spur a fellow bro on.
Movember’s also a good time to kick start your journey to better health. Pick up a new sport, gain new knowledge and seek inspiration from men who have made a difference throughout history. Go for a medical screening and work your way towards peak physical and mental condition.
Of course, you can support the cause in other ways, like a donation to the Movember Foundation or by hosting an event that celebrates life itself. Every effort counts and together, we can create a lasting impact for all men.
